Three Sandburg students received Student Scholarship Awards from the Illinois Community College Faculty Association at its annual conference in November.
Briana Chavez, Larry Kamara and Lorenzo Schons each received a $1,000 scholarship from the ICCFA in recognition of their academic success, campus involvement, commitment to engagement and community service.
Chavez, Kamara and Schons were three of the seven Illinois community college students to accept ICCFA Student Scholarship Awards this year. Applications for the scholarship were available to students at each of the state’s 48 community colleges.
Chavez is a member of Women of Character; the Hispanic Latino Student Association; TRIO Student Support Services; Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society; the National Society of Leadership and Success; and is a student ambassador. She also volunteers with Loving Bottoms Diaper Bank and has been active with YMCA events and the Special Olympics. Chavez plans to transfer from Sandburg and earn her bachelor’s in elementary education with a focus on English as a Second Language.
Kamara is a member of Men of Distinction, the African Student Association, PTK and the Black Student Association. He’s also a student ambassador and is a member of the Chargers cross country team. Kamara volunteers at the Galesburg Rescue Mission. After graduating from Sandburg, he plans to earn a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering.
Schons has been involved with Men of Distinction, the Hispanic Latino Student Association, PTK and the National Society of Leadership. He’s also president of the International Club in addition to being a student ambassador and a member of the Sandburg men’s soccer team. Schons’ volunteer activities have included time with local K-12 reading programs, the Special Olympics and area food organizations. He plans to transfer from Sandburg and get his bachelor’s in psychology.
This marked the third consecutive year and fourth time in five years Sandburg has had at least one student receive an ICCFA Student Scholarship Award.
